Golfito Sailfish Rancho, GSR, is exactly what its name says and then some. Located just outside of Golfito, Costa Rica, GSR has some of the best billfishing water in the world. The lodge itself is carved out of the Jungle and sits on a stretch of beach that is cut off from the rest of Costa Rica. No roads in or out, everything comes and goes by boat to and from the town near by.

The lodge is laid out to take advantage of the afternoon and evening on shore breeze that blows in off the Pacific Ocean, across the Gulf of Dulce and into your own private spacious room. There is nothing between your room and a fabulous view of the gulf but a pair of rocking chairs with your name on it.

Between the two wings of the lodge is the huge, circular, outdoor veranda that is the central gathering place for all meals and drinks. If can be found in Costa Rica, GSR will have it stocked at the bar. Everything you need is in one central place and all you have to do is reach for it. The meals are served family style with an abundance of fresh fruit and the freshest seafood in Costa Rica.

If you are looking for serious saltwater action without sacrificing the comforts of home and still feel like you are on the beach in Central America, this is it. If you need a fully air-conditioned hermetically sealed environment with room service and beachside activities, this is not for you. Serious anglers seeking fine onshore accommodations and the best billfish action on the planet earth. Come hungry!

Fishing at Golfito Sailfish Rancho

Golfito Sailfish Rancho offers the ultimate fishing experience for any angler. Both the novice and the veteran angler will enjoy the challenge of fishing these awesome Pacific waters. Offshore, chase the dancing Pacific Sailfish, the feisty Blue and Black Marlin, the tough Yellow Fin Tuna and the beautiful Dorado.

Inshore, tangle with the exotic Roosterfish, huge Gouper, many different types of Snapper, including the beast of Snappers, the cubera. All types of Jacks and Mackerel, Blue Trevally, Pacific Black Snook, Amberjack, African Pompano and a whole lot more give the angler a wonderful variety of exciting fishing.

All of the Rancho boats have tournament quality rods and reels for both offshore and inshore fishing. From Penn 12s to Penn 50s, the angler will be ready for anything! The lodge also uses circle hooks to help ensure the healthy release of the fish-unless it's going to be served for dinner!

For those customers wishing to fish with light tackle we do suggest you bring your own favorite outfit. For Sailfish, we recommend something that is in the heavy action range with at least a 15lb. test line capacity. Those suckers can run! For roosterfish and snapper, a lighter rod can be used, but still, a reel that can hold at least 15 lb. test line. The lodge has a great selection of top water lures for our customers.

Sailfish on the Fly:

How would you like to cast your fly to a fish that maybe longer than your fly rod? That's right...longer than your 9-foot fly rod. If you want an adrenaline rush almost equal to landing on an aircraft carrier, try a pacific sailfish on fly! You will be close up and personal with your adversary. It's not as difficult as you might believe.

Picture this scenario: The ocean, glassy smooth, as the Pacific often is. The sky, gray and almost threatening, a thunderstorm brewing on the horizon. Your crew has rigged three softhead teasers with the belly-strip from a bonito sewed inside. Suddenly the tip of a bill appears behind the far teaser. You feel this in your gut; a sailfish is checking out your teaser.

Your David/Goliath adventure is about to begin. In about three seconds, all hell is going to break loose. The sail will grab the teaser, but the mate will snatch it away. Two or three times. Now the sail is mad as hell. That's when you drop that popper three feet behind its tail.
